Choosing the Right Pillowcases

When selecting pillowcases, the first step is to find the right size. Pillowcases aren’t always purchased with bedding, especially when using non-standard pillows. At Schlafgut, we offer not only traditional pillow covers but also special sizes to meet individual needs.

Natural, skin-friendly fabrics like cotton are ideal for pillowcases. They are gentle on both skin and hair, which can suffer from rough materials. That's why at Schlafgut, our beautiful pillowcases are made from skin-friendly fabrics and colors. Quality is also crucial: A high-quality pillowcase is characterized by durability, easy care, and long-lasting colors, especially important for pillow covers.

Elastic pillowcases are particularly comfortable and practical. They are easy to put on and fit smoothly without wrinkles, adapting perfectly to the shape of both soft and firm pillows. Schlafgut offers a wide range of colors to perfectly match existing bedding or the environment in your living or sleeping area.

A pillowcase for the standard pillow is part of the classic bedding set. Covers in other sizes can be used for decorative or comfort pillows. Various pillowcase sizes are available in numerous colors. For aesthetic appeal, decorative stitching and zippers are often in matching colors, beneficial not only for decorative pillows in the living room but also for creating an inviting atmosphere in bedrooms or guest rooms.

What Sizes Are Available for Pillowcases?

The standard pillow size is 80x80 cm. Pillowcases in this standard size are readily available. Additional sizes are offered for narrower pillows. When measuring pillows, it's helpful to follow the outer edge. Thick pillows can be a bit tricky, while thinner pillows pose fewer issues. When in doubt, pillowcases should be slightly larger than the pillows themselves.

Common pillowcase sizes include:

  • 15x40 cm,
  • 40x40 cm,
  • 40x60 cm,
  • 40x80 cm,
  • 80x80 cm.

A special option at Schlafgut is the fitted pillowcase. It features an elastic band for a perfect fit on neck or back pillows. The flexible jersey pillowcase is easy to put on and remains wrinkle-free, suitable for sizes ranging from S to XL, even fitting long side-sleeper pillows.

What Types of Pillowcases Are Available?

A snug pillowcase made of jersey or Mako satin is skin-friendly and meets high-quality standards. In addition to traditional cotton pillowcases, Schlafgut offers cotton covers that are exceptionally soft and pair perfectly with jersey fitted sheets. Among top products are organic cotton pillowcases.

Typical materials for pillowcases include:

  • 100% cotton,
  • Jersey with elastane,
  • Linon.

A knitted jersey pillowcase is highly durable. Cotton is a safe choice for every season. However, various cotton qualities are available.

Jersey pillowcases are simultaneously soft, slightly stretchy, and durable. Along with easy care properties, they offer excellent comfort, wicking away moisture for a pleasant sleeping environment. For those prone to sweating, a smooth fabric surface may be more comfortable.

The softer and smoother the fabric, the more pleasant it feels, particularly for sensitive facial skin. A densely woven, smooth, and snug fabric like 100% Mako satin cotton is ideal, crucial for restless sleepers.

A blend of cotton and elastane offers numerous advantages. The stretchiness of flexible cotton makes it easy to put on, while maintaining excellent shape stability.

How Do I Wash Pillowcases Properly?

Check the label for washing instructions, such as the maximum washing temperature, to properly care for pillowcases. When used regularly in bed, pillowcases should be washed with other bedding. Bedding should be changed at least every three weeks.

In general, these items can be washed at 60 degrees Celsius. Cotton bedding can be dried in the tumble dryer. Air drying on a clothesline is particularly eco-friendly.

Compared to larger sheets and duvet covers, pillowcases are smaller and can be hung on a drying rack without folding over. This is even easier for pillowcases measuring 40x40 cm or smaller. Pillowcases dry quickly in fresh air, leaving them smelling fresh.

Ironing is generally unnecessary, not only for jersey pillowcases but also for cotton or Linon. With the easy-care quality of Schlafgut, maintenance is quickly taken care of.

How Many Pillowcases Should I Own?

For each bed, it's recommended to have at least two sets of bedding to avoid issues when changing bedding. Typically, households have three or four pillowcases per bed on average. This allows for using different fabrics in winter and summer, ensuring comfortable sleeping conditions.

For those frequently hosting overnight guests, additional pillowcases and duvet covers are needed for the guest bed. It's essential that pillowcases match extra pillows. If the cover is significantly larger than the pillow, it can be folded over, though this may be cumbersome. Conversely, a pillowcase that's too small is impractical. While it's not necessary to have a spare cover for every decorative pillow, having replacements for guests is recommended.
