Frequently Asked Questions
Fitted sheets are available in various standard sizes depending on the width and length of the mattress. Schlafgut offers a simplified sizing system with four main categories. Size S fits mattresses from 90x190 cm to 100x220 cm. For larger single mattresses, size M is suitable, covering mattresses from 120x200 cm to 130x220 cm. Double mattresses with a width between 140x200 cm and 160x220 cm are covered by size L. For extra-large beds, size XL is ideal, covering mattresses from 180x200 cm to 200x220 cm.
The correct size for your fitted sheet can be determined by measuring the length, width, and height of your mattress. Measure the length from head to foot, the width at the widest point, and the height from the bottom to the top of the mattress. These measurements help you select the right size, especially if you use a thick mattress or topper. Alternatively, you can also check the label on your current fitted sheet, which often indicates the size and provides a reference for your next purchase. With this information, you can find the perfect size – S, M, L, or XL – in the Schlafgut size system for a perfect fit.
The terms Kingsize and Queensize come from the Anglo-American world and refer to mattresses of different widths. In Germany, and at Schlafgut, Queensize usually refers to a mattress with a width of 140 to 160 cm and a length of 200 to 220 cm, which corresponds to size L at Schlafgut. Kingsize, on the other hand, is suitable for wider mattresses, from 180 to 200 cm and a length of 200 to 220 cm, which corresponds to Schlafgut size XL.
The height of the side of a fitted sheet refers to how high the mattress, including any topper, can be for the sheet to fit properly. It describes the side part of the sheet that wraps around and fixes under the mattress. A suitable height is essential for a wrinkle-free fit and prevents the sheet from slipping off.
The most common mattress size in Germany for single beds is 90x200 cm, as it is suitable for both children and adults. For double beds, 180x200 cm is the most common choice as it offers space for two people and ensures comfort. Mattresses in these sizes are widely available and fit most bed frames and fitted sheets.
It is recommended to change the fitted sheet every one to two weeks to maintain a hygienic sleeping environment. If you sweat heavily or suffer from allergies, you should change the sheet more frequently to prevent dust mites and bacteria.
The largest fitted sheet in the world was made in 2014 in Egypt, measuring an incredible 70 x 50 meters. It was made from numerous cotton strips and served as a marketing stunt to promote the local textile industry. Such oversized fitted sheets are not intended for everyday use but to attract attention and set records. For everyday use, Schlafgut offers practical sizes up to 200x220 cm, which fit standard mattresses perfectly.
